Montgomery Moths (Diving beetle and Dragonflys)

A night at the in-laws in Welshpool last night meant a few different moths from the usual.
Macros included:-
A worn Beautiful Snout - a first for me
Orange Swift - dark form
5 Svensson's Copper Underewings
Straw Dot
Single dotted Wave
Dingy Footman
The usual good numbers of various Yellow Underwings, Dark Arches, Common Rustics, Dark Brocades etc.

Micros identified incuded:-
Mother of Pearl
presumed Apple Ermines
Chequered Fruit Tree Tortix
Cydia Splendana

Also in the trap a Diving Beetle of sorts - must be pond life migration time!

Beautiful Snout. When I first saw this at 9.30pm last night, it was a fine specimen. By 7am this morning it had battered itself against the lid and was almost unrecogizable!
 Orange Swift (dark form)
 Single dotted Wave
 Straw Dot
 Mother of Pearl
 Chequered Fruit Tree Tortix
 Cydia Splendana
Diving Beetle!

Also got a Dragonfly tick today - a Downy Emerald while I was walking along the River Severn near Welshpool. Beautiful Demoiselle and Emperor seen too.

  1. Marc,

That is a very late sighting of Downy Emerald even allowing for the lousy wet weather delaying things somewhat. Did you get a photo of it, no matter how poor? Did you know that it has not been seen in Montgomery before so it would be a new county record?

  2. Hi Dragonflyman,
Thanks for the message. I'm no expert so maybe I was mistaken. Unfortunately I had no camera at the time. All I went on is that it was a metalic 'green' dragonfly of a reasonable size. When I checked the literature when I got home, the only two other green dragonflies (Brilliant and Northern Emerald weren't found anywhere near Wales). The area I was looking was very good for dragonflies, a series of bends in the river just south of Welshpool on the road to Leighton.
Is there any other species it might have been?
